LAGODEKHI PRESERVED TERRITORIES are located in the north-eastern part of Georgia, on the border with Dagestan and Azerbaijan, within the Kavkasioni mountain range in Kakheti, on the 400-3500 meters above the sea level. Overall area of the territory is 244 sq.m. It consists of two parts – a sanctuary and conservation area. Lagodekhi preserved territories are the oldest in the Caucasus and its environment received a sanctuary status at the beginning of the last century.
Sanctuary which was founded in 1912 was linked to the great number of endemic species. There are more than 100 species of plants which are endemic for the Caucasus and Georgia and identify exceptional character of the preserved territory. The relief of the preserved territory is ‘guttered’ with gorges of rivers and many waterfalls. Here is also rather deepwater Black Rock lake which in the Alpine zone creates inimitable landscape. Relatively long history of Lagodekhi preserved territories has been vividly reflected on the environment.
Here is well represented vertical zone of natural conditions, pristine environment of nature, landscape and biovariety. The largest area in the preserved territories is occupied by beech forest, second come alder groves, hornbeam groves and oak groves. In the sub-Alpine zone oak groves, birch wood and rhododendron bushes are extended. The fauna of the preserved territories is rich and diverse where the bulk of species are birds (150 species) and mammals (53 species). Such animals as lynx (Lynx lynx), wolf (Canis lupus), brown bear (Ursus arctos), chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra), Caucasian aurochs (Capra cylindricornis), deer (Cervus elaphus), roebuck (Capreolus capreolus), boar (Sus scofa), lammergeyer (Gypaetos barbatus), mountain eagle (Aquila heliaca), falcon (Falco peregrinis), mountain (Aquila chrysaetus fulva) and valley (Aquila nipalensis) eagle, Eastern Imperial Eagle (Aquila heliaca), Caucasian heath cock (Tetrao mlokosiewiczi) and Caucasian mountain turkey (Teatraogalus caucasicus) have established here their habitat. In the vicinity of preserved territories there are numerous important historical and archeological monuments.
