BATUMI BOTANICAL GARDEN (GREEN CAPE)

BATUMI BOTANICAL GARDEN, or Green Cape is situated on the Black sea coast, to the north from the city and extends over 111 hectares. The cultivation of the botanical garden was launched back in 1889 by a famous decorator and chief gardener of Batumi, D’Alphonse. From southern France he imported a big number of plant cultures. From 1912 Professor A. Krasnov created a project for development of a garden. He invited Yason Gordeziani for the position of a chief gardener under leadership of whom Japanese, Chinese, Mexican, Australian, Chilean, New Zealand, American and European divisions were developped.

Batumi botanical garden is a member of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN). There are 3 exotic plant plots, a sanctuary of Kolkheti forest and 9 florist divisions created on the principle of geography of landscape. Botanical garden is one of the outstanding in the world by its space, species diversity and age.
